Featured keynote
speaker CHTIC 2007: Jacob Gelt Dekker
Jacob Gelt Dekker, a
renaissance man for the hotel
and tourism investment
world of our times.
One man is credited with almost
single-handedly spearheading the revival of Otrobanda, a
historical enclave in Curaçao that had deteriorated into
a slum
of fallen-down buildings plagued with drug
dealing, prostitution, and seemingly hopeless poverty -
Jacob Gelt Dekker.

Today, Otrabanda's harbor front
hums with new life. The pioneer project that started it
all is Dekker's Kurá Hulanda, an eight-square-block
village-within-a-village containing an 80-room luxury
boutique hotel, an international cultural studies
institute and a world-class African/Caribbean museum of
anthropology, archaeology, and art that has drawn more
than 100,000 visitors since opening in 1999.
Then there's Lodge Kurá Hulanda, a
luxury beachfront retreat in Westpunt, Curaçao. There,
an ambitious initiative is underway that involves the
development of the coastline at Lodge Kura Hulanda, as
well as the culturing and production of various marine
species and plants using the existing natural
environment.
Dekker officially retired in the
late 1990s and then poured his energy and fortune into
creating the JADE Foundation, a non-profit organization
dedicated to enhancing education and providing
assistance to the children of Curaçao. His love for
children is evident from those that gather at the hotel
daily asking if he is in town and hoping to spend a few
minutes with him before they go off to do their
homework.
CHTIC is honored to host Jacob Gelt
Dekker as your keynote speaker on Thursday, May 10th.
