Today, I want to update you on the construction of
Khan Yang school in Laos. Our project team has just come
back from Laos. The construction progresses well and in
a separate e-mail, I will send you some current
pictures. Construction should be finished around
March/April 2008 and we will inform you accordingly.

December 2007:
There must be thousands of children in this world who
would love to have their school at a location like this
one. The school grounds, especially the golf lawn like
football field in front of the school, offers a stunning
view on the Mekong, from which a constant breeze is
blowing. A couple of coconut trees outline the vast
area.
The Khan Yang secondary school is located on the same
bank as Khon Kaen where we built one of our first
schools in Laos. The secondary school offers grade 1 to
3 for about 130 students aged between 13 and 15. The
four-room building lies in the middle of the four
villages where the students come from and can be reached
either on foot or, particularly during the rainy season,
by boat. The school was built in 1982 by the government
but has to be maintained by the community ever since. In
spite of the villagers’ efforts to permanently upgrade
and renovate the building its shape is getting worse.
Since Child’s Dream already provided this community
with a primary school, we decided to also grant their
request for a secondary school in order to complete the
basic education circle for these four villages. We
therefore agreed to build a new school including 4
classrooms and a teachers’ room. An additional class
rooms will allow them to also offer secondary grade 4
and 5. We will also provide them with furniture.
Child’s Dream agreed to build a new five-room
building and to also finance the furniture. The
projected costs are about THB 1.3 Mio (approx. USD
38,500). We expect the building to be complete by
February 2008.
Project Updates
19 Jul 07 - We signed the contract with the school
committee and the workers, they will start with the
construction of the new school in early August.
29 Jun 07 - The village-committee will report us
constantly about the progress on the construction site. |
