Het Parool - The Merchandising of Rembrandt

Amsterdam , The Netherlands July 6, 2006

The merchandising of Rembrandt at Rembrandt's 400-year commemoration is overwhelming and as much a fact as Rembrandt's name, art and place in history.

At the 100-year commemoration of Vincent van Gogh, Jacob Gelt Dekker, introduced merchandising into Dutch society, much to the chagrin of the Dutch government and the entire art world, who loudly voiced their disapproval. Gelt Dekker, as pioneer, quickly conquered the world market with over 1000 Van Gogh products in more than 25 countries. In Japan alone, over US$ 500 million worth of merchandise was sold.

In 2001, Gelt Dekker gifted the companies Van Gogh International BV and Van Gogh Marketing BV to the Vincent van Gogh Museum Foundation.
