Initial real estate development in the 1970's and '80's in Amsterdam, evolved into a multiple of retail and service chains, when a weak real estate market and economic recession did not supply sufficient rental tenants for the properties.

Not rentable excess space hotels like in the Pullmann, Barbizon and Sonesta was converted into spa's and fitness clubs, a novelty in the '70's, blown over from California.
