Ex 4 The elegant white vapor trails look more like black
fume tracks full of thud when
observed from outer
space. With more that 45 million flights in air traffic
controller’s
data banks, the globe is totally
encapsulated in a layer of exhaust.
Ex. 5. More than
100,000 flights per 24 hours color the shies red
Ex. 6 They are
not the only polluters of our atmosphere. Industrial
pollution, automobile car traffic
exhaust , chemical and
radioactive waste, and last but not least the Co2 of 6,5
billion human beings on
the globe today.
Ex. 7. The worst
are persistent pollutants. Pollutants that do not wash
out and remain in the
environment for ever. More then
20 persistent Organic polluitants have been identified.
Ex. 8.
Persistent Organic Pollutants, POPs, spread
consistently. The DDT’s used in Africa as pesticides in
the 1960’s wasted into the oceans and turn up today in
fish, seal, polar bear and human beings, causing
an
outburst of decease.
Ex. 9 Global
pollution distribution goes over land, through the
oceans and through long range atmospheric
transport.
Millions of lights plough the pollution clouds into the
atmospheric layers and transport them
across in their
wake.
Ex. 10 Only at
the North and South poles where atmospheric water
solidifies in ice and sea water filters
out through fish
and polar wild life, we can identify and measure the
POP concentrations.
With the melting
op the polar ice caps, we suddenly have access to
pollution deposits of tens of thousands
of years. So
far, the comparisons of recent and archaic deposits are
shocking; 1000 up to 10,000 times.
Ex 11. The
concentrations are so high that polar wild life is
threatened with extinction. Also Inuit children
are
full of POP’s . The outburst of diabetes, most likely
caused by POP’s is universal.
Ex. 12 The
United Nations Environment Program has launched a world
wide effort to save the polar bears.
Ex 13 In the
European Union calls grow for an airline pollution tax.
Ex. 14 The
question is, what can we, in the airline industry do
about it
Ex. 15 Bronson
called for the use of alternative fuels.
O’Leary suggested to ban all old aircraft, who are the
heaviest polluters,.
Ex. 16 Some see
the solution in saving fuel by flapping your wings.
Ex.17 On 19 June
2007, the US and EU launched airline pollution
initiatives. The forecasted increase in
passengers—from
180 million passengers a year now to 500 million by
2030- will have a huge impact on global
warming.
The objective of
15-20% fuel consumption of a totally new generation of
airplanes is achievable.
Ex. 18 Designing
small Gas Turbine Engines for low noise and clean
exhaust is making giant leaps of progress.
Ex 19 en 20
Boeing 787 Dreamliner and Airbus 380 made a very
promising start. They are made of light weight
composite materials rather than aluminum
Energy require
to take off and fly is directly proportional to the mass
of the planes. A reduction of mass will
result in a
reduction of fuel use.
Ex. 21 Honda’s
executive lightweight jet uses 35% less fuel. In three
days a 100 were sold.

Marketing pollution and fuel efficiency by the airline
industry is hardly done.
Creating public
awareness via the in flight entertainment system can
be a very powerful tool . In Europe
a voluntary
pollution tax of Euro 23 is already in place with a
number of environmentally conscience airline
companies.
Ex. 22 The
automotive industry used fuel efficiency as a powerful
tool to develop new markets. May the airline
industry
follow in its footsteps.
